In this project, I explore the question: What does it mean to be a mother? I never had a chance to meet my mother. In August 2019, I set out to ask women the real meaning of being a mom. I talked with single mothers, young mothers, and experienced mothers. The series is made up of intimate portraits of these women in their homes with quotations in their own words about their experiences. I hoped to give an insight into motherhood in Rwanda today. “Being a mother” has been a very personal and rewarding project that was recently honored with the Eric Beecroft Golden Scarf Award at the Foundry Photojournalism workshop.

Kinigi is located on the outskirts of the Volcanoes National Park in Musanze District. This year, 19 baby gorillas will be named as part of continued efforts to rally for the conservation of the endangered species. The 2017 Kwita Izina is the 13th edition. The ceremony is derived from a Rwandan tradition where the community gathers to celebrate and name a newborn. There has been growing concern from environment activists that growing human encroachment is threatening depletion on biodiversity, including the endangered mountain gorillas. According to Animal Fact Guide, a resource for on wildlife, mountain gorillas, the strong apes inhabiting Africa's volcanic slopes, have few natural predators. Yet due to unfavorable human activity, such as poaching, civil war, and habitat destruction, the mountain gorilla, a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, has become "the most endangered" type of gorilla. Currently, the mountain gorilla's habitat is limited to protected national parks in two regions of Africa. One group is spread over three national parks in the Virunga transboundary region Rwanda, DR Congo, and Uganda. The other group lives in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. About 800 mountain gorillas are left in the entire world. Rwanda is home to about 400 of them with the rest shared between the other two borders, though they all freely move along the borders. Some 239 mountain gorillas have been named in the 12 ceremonies since the first Kwita Izina in 2005. Is the first Kwita Izina the gorilla population has grown by 26.6 per cent.
Mountain gorillas contribute up to 90 percent of government revenues from national parks. In 2016 alone, Rwanda earned $404 million from tourism. The target this year is $444 million. Akagera National Park covers about 1,120km² and is one of Africa’s oldest national parks, first gazetted in 1934.
The north of Akagera is mostly fairly low-lying grasslands and savannah plains, similar in feel to the 'traditional' safari areas of East Africa. To the west are rolling hills and valleys more typical of Rwandan countryside while to the east, the Akagera River feeds into a series of lakes, marshes and papyrus swamps that constitute central and eastern Africa’s largest protected wetlands. So, for a fairly small National Park, an Akagera safari can be extremely diverse with a variety of habitats, wildlife and birds, and some lovely scenery The game on an Akagera safari includes most of the usual plains species. Impala and topi seem to be dominant, with eland, oribi, Masai giraffe, Defassa waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck, sable and roan antelope also present. Burchall's zebra, lions, birds hippo and crocodile are commonly seen whilst game viewing; buffalo are more prevalent in the north as are elephants, although more restricted. Prior to and after the wedding ceremony there are a number of traditional practices that take place. The nature of these practices have changed over time, with several ceremonies being combined to take place over a shorter period, however many elements remain as they were hundreds of years ago. |
